Snake!?

Looks like Ladybug ran into a snake Sunday. Sunday night I thought she looked a little swollen above her right eye. Monday morning you couldn’t see her right eye and the entire right side of her head down into her neck was swelled up. It was cold Sunday so I never even considered a snake. I was thinking wasp or bumble bee because they have been flying lately. The vet is sure it is a snake though so I will go with it.

These pictures are after she spent the day with the vet. The swelling has gone down and you can see her eye again.

On a side note I have been collecting turkey, goose, and blue chicken eggs. I started the goose and turkey eggs in the incubator and will add the chicken eggs in a couple of days. That way the chicks will hatch off a day or so before any turkeys. Turkey chicks always do better with someone to teach them to eat and drink. The goose eggs may not do anything. She started a nest in the compost pile but the chickens covered the eggs scratching around. She abandoned the 3 eggs so I scooped them up before this last cold spell. I haven’t had much luck with goose eggs. Over the years I have only hatched out 2 geese. Time will tell.

Flipping gates and sagging fences

Sunday while I was enjoying a fresh cup of morning coffee I heard Jake and the other dogs barking in the front yard. Normally I wouldn’t have even gotten up but Jake is the new kid on the block and doesn’t bark at much of anything. I expected to see my mother in the driveway but no, both of the boars were in the front yard. The electric fence that was keeping them from going under a low spot in the fence was off and they had gotten into an area they normally can’t get to. This area has access to the yard and trash cans full of chicken feed through a small gate. This gate wasn’t modified for pigs because they can’t get to it. They flipped it off the hinges and turned over both cans full of feed. Thankfully only one was full. They ate the little that was left in one can and several pounds from the other before wandering over by the front door.

After getting them back where they were supposed to be and cleaning up the feed I went around and modified all the gates so the pigs couldn’t lift them off.

Tuesday when I got home from work Lisa informed me that she had not seen Jake. Everyone else was there but not him. Usually he is all over you before anyone else. Still too much puppy in him. I have been working on stopping the jumping and mouthing you but it is still an issue. Anyway, I went out to look around and noticed that Sadie wasn’t around either but Lisa assured me she was earlier. By now it’s starting to get dark so I went to get a light and start my search. By the time I got back to the barn Sadie was back but still no Jake. I started walking the fence and calling for him.

I found a place in the fence where the goats had walked it down and it looks like them and the dogs had been coming and going for a while. There was a trail leading right to the spot that you could see in the dark by flashlight. I don’t know why the cows weren’t getting out. I could have stepped over without brushing my pants on the wire. Since everyone was at the barn and not going anywhere until daylight I left it so Jake could come back through it if he would. I then went for a drive hoping not to see him on the road. Luckily I didn’t but I didn’t find him anywhere else either. I spoke to one lady who asked if I was lost when I turned around in her neighbors drive way. I told her about Jake and gave her a description so she could keep an eye out for him. I went home hoping, expecting to see him when I got up this morning.

Still no Jake. After milking the cow and feeding everyone I fixed the fence. After that I walked the rest of the fence and found a couple of other places that needed attention. They were not as bad as the place I had just taken care of but I tightened them up to keep the goats from finding them next.

It figures that he would run away after I started getting attached to him. I got him his shots last weekend and he has an appointment this Friday to get fixed. Maybe he new and will show back up Saturday morning. Lol I didn’t really need another dog so if he takes up with someone else that is ok as long as he stays off the road and doesn’t get into trouble. I’d hate for someone to shoot him because he gets into their trash or plays too rough. Both are always a possibility around here.

Maybe I will find him today when I get home and it’s still daylight.

Shower project update

The shower is almost complete. This project has taken far longer than I had planned. Partly due to interruptions. I also didn’t consider all the tile cutting that I was going to have to do once I got to the narrow sections of wall. Sunday every piece of tile had to be custom cut. That is very time consuming.

I should have everything but the grouting done tonight.

Memorial Day Weekend

We had a very nice visit with Marcie from Tennessee on Saturday. I hope our KuneKune/AGH sows hurry up and have their piglets so you can pick your 2 guilts up when you are in the area again.

We had more company Sunday when Kat brought her son Kiellean and her mother out to the farm to see the animals. It is always nice to see children interacting with farm animals.

In between the company I got the rest of the garden planted and started a shower renovation that will continue into this week. Hope to have it complete before this next weekend. Then I can start a new project.

1-Shower before Originally we just had sheets of shower board over sheetrock and a concrete floor. It was never intended to last this long but just to get us past the inspection so we could close on the house. I took Friday off and gutted the shower down to the studs.

2-shower gutted with new drainI didn’t do the old pan and drain correctly so I had to install a new drain. Fortunately there was no damage to the sub-floor.

3-preslope4-darn catOn Saturday I was able to get the pre-slope in. And smooth out the cat tracks before it set up. Those darn curious cats.

6-floorAfter curing over night I was able to install the pan, put up the vapor barrier and pour the floor.

7-hard board installedMonday, the day I originally hoped I would be laying tile, I was finally able to get the hard board up. I guess I’ll be tiling a little after work every night. Maybe by this weekend we will have the use of our shower again. Until then it’s upstairs to the guest bathroom for a shower.

Update – Lola must have heard me say she was going to be sausage if she didn’t straighten up and take care of her piglets this time. She has been the perfect mama. She brought them out of the woods for a visit Sunday. All are doing well. I guess she thought the horses hay looked like the perfect place to feed the her bunch.
