Thats got to hurt.

Well, Otis is spending some quality time with the veterinarian this week.

We saw him last Saturday night but when we left for Church Sunday morning he was no where to be seen. Missing all day Sunday, by Monday morning we expected the worst. Sebastian came in from doing his chores and said Otis wasn’t back. Then 5 or 10 minutes later when he and JennaKay went out the door for school he was laying by the inside gate.

When I checked him out I didn’t feel anything broken and nothing looked swollen. When I started messing with his hip, that was obviously painful. The kids went on to school and we waited for the local vet to open.

Of course, the regular vet was out and someone else was standing in. I should have walked right back out and taken Otis to our other vet in Auburn but I didn’t. She looked him over and did an x-ray. The hip was dislocated but the angle didn’t show how much. She had to sedate him and even that wasn’t working and ended up having to gas him on top of everything else to be able to get a good x-ray. She took one look at that picture and said there isn’t anything I can do for him and suggested we take him to the University. $300.00 and we are now on our way to our Auburn Vet.

We told him we thought Otis had been hit by a car and the other vet said she couldn’t help. He took one look at the x-ray and said this is classic big dog vs car hip dislocation. He immediately had two ideas for treatment. The first was to get the ball joint back into the socket and tie his leg so that it couldn’t pop back out…hopefully. If this didn’t work he would need to remove the ball from the leg bone and create a floating joint.

Well, even with his back leg tied up like a Thanksgiving Turkey the hip popped back out the first day but they got it back in. Just got notified that it’s been 2 days and it looks like everything is going to stay in place. Fingers crossed but it’s good news. Looks like he will be there for a few more days and when he comes home he will be confined to a kennel for a few weeks.

Update: The Vet tried to wrap his leg up pressing the joint back in place. As of Friday it appeared to be holding.

Unfortunately x-rays on Monday showed that it had popped out again. So they unwrapped his hip for now and he is scheduled for surgery on Friday.

The Simple Life?

I can’t even remember when all I had to to in the morning was shower and get dressed before leaving for work. Working full time jobs, plus the homestead, and now a son and daughter with all their needs and school activities, make life anything but simple.

That said, simple doesn’t sound very appealing compared to the reward and fulfillment we get from staying busy with the farm and the kids. There is never a dull moment and boredom is no longer even in our vocabulary.

I’m sure we are in better health with the farm than we would be in if we just came home and flopped in front of the TV after work. We do some of that too but not as often as most. I know I am in much better shape. I can’t run as far as I once could. I give out quicker than I did years ago but I attribute that to sitting in an air conditioned office all day and just flat getting older. I can still throw two sacks of feed on my shoulder and carry them to or from the feed barn with out too much problem. If I have a bad day it only takes a few minutes out with the animals for it to all wash away. Well, most of it anyway.

After years of being away from the church we started attending Wallace Chapel Baptist Church full time last year. We are very active in the church for the first time in my life. The only down side is it only leaves me with Saturday and vacations to get things done on the farm. The reward far exceeds any inconvenience. The fences and gates will get fixed, eventually. Holidays are just around the corner. I’ve burned up all my vacation and sick days getting the kids settled but a new year is also just around the corner with a new set of days to work with. I just have to get to January 1st. In the mean time we just plug along doing what has to be done and patching the rest until later.

My life may not be simple but it has value. I am so blessed to have a wonderful, loving wife, and two new kids.

Good by Calvin

Sad morning. While doing my morning chores I found one of our original goats, Calvin laying next to the fence dead. The first four goats we started with were from my Grand Uncles flock. Lisa named them from TV and cartoon characters. We had Buffy and Jody from “Family Affair” and Calvin and Hobbs. Buffy is the only one left and it will be a truly sad day when she goes. She and Jody were extra special to Lisa.

I don’t know what the life expectancy for goats is off the top of my head, but I have to think 15 years is a pretty good run.

It is official!

As of Thursday Sept 6th 2018 our adoption of JennaKay and Sebastian is final. They are now Newby’s.

We filled the room with family and friends. Even the judge was taken by surprised by the turn out. Our Church Family really showed up. I’d guess that half the people in attendance were from Wallace Chapel Baptist Church.

A big thank you to all who showed up to make an already special event just a little more special.
