Life and Death on the Farm

A couple of weeks ago we lost one of a geese. The very next morning a little bantam hen came out with nine chicks. About four days later another one showed up with eight of her own.

Having animals is a continuous roller coaster ride. We’ve had the geese for about four years and have been hoping they would raise more but something keeps getting the eggs. We did hatch Rosco out in the incubator but over all we haven’t had any luck with goose eggs in the incubator. Unfortunately as noted in earlier posts Rosco died after a long battle with some illness that never was 100% diagnosed. We still have a pair of geese so maybe this spring everything will fall in line.

You really can’t stay down long after a loss because there is always new life here. Especially with the bantams. They are the most broody chickens we have ever had. It doesn’t matter the time of year. They have given us chicks in late December and January. Not the best time of year to be raising chicks but they are excellent mothers and most of the chicks make it.
