New House Speaker and Maine Shooter

Well we have a new Speaker of the House. Sadly, based on his voting record, he is very similar to the old Speaker but it could have been worse. Time will tell if he is just another establishment system first hack or if he will move the party towards a more Constitutional footing.

Well another mentally ill person has shot and killed a bunch of people in Maine. First lets pray for the individuals and their families who have been killed or injured. Now it’s just a matter of time before we start hearing politicians wanting to take our guns again. It is reported that this individual is an ex-military firearms instructor who is mentally ill and was recently institutionalized. This is not a gun issue. It is a mental illness issue and a law enforcement issue. There is no way this individual could have legally acquired a firearm.

Leadership

I got a call yesterday from an old friend from my Air Force days in Alaska. During the call the discussion briefly turned to leadership or the lack of leadership in many if not most civilian organizations. I am a member of several organizations and the only one that doesn’t suffer from a lack of leadership on some level, as far as I can tell, is the American Legion.

Leadership can be summed up in three words. Service before self. If you volunteered for or were elected to a leadership position you are obligated to be the example to others. If the organization has a function you should be there unless work or illness prevent it. Everyone needs or think they need a vacation. Just don’t schedule it over the organizations activities. You’re the face of the organization. You also don’t allow self interest to alter the direction of the organization. The organizations wellbeing comes before your likes and wants.

Organizations struggle to keep active members. Part of the reason is that the “leadership” is not leading. If they skip the organizations activities the rank and file members see no reason to show up either. The members are not children and “do as I say not as I do” doesn’t work. If you show a lack of commitment the membership will too. It’s that simple.

The House Speaker Fight

What is currently playing out is a fight between the status quo and some trying to force Republicans to live up to their platform.

Republicans get elected by preaching small government and traditional family values. When they get to DC they fold like napkins and become institutionalized swamp creatures. In general they just go with the flow to keep their cushy tax payer funded gravy train.

We have an opportunity to make a huge step towards upholding the platform if not the Constitution with Jim Jordan. There are a few who just want to keep the status quo and a few who have gotten their feelings hurt by the way things have played out. Both need to step up and put the country ahead of their personal feelings and ambitions. Sadly that is not likely to happen unless their constituents make their phones ring.

Are You Ready?

Are you ready for hardships from job loss to global catastrophe? Probably not the latter but what about the former or what might be in between? I have always been a little “Prepper” minded. A job loss in 2008 caused me to start getting serious. The Covid lockdowns and the shortages it caused proved that my efforts were not wrong. For the most part we didn’t skip a beat during covid. It did cause us to ramp up our preps. We are still not where I would like to be but we’re still moving forward.

One of the things I finally pulled the trigger on was in the area of communications. I got my HAM and GMRS licenses. Yes, HAM requires a series of tests to get different levels of access. There are many free study options. I used hamstudy.org to get both Technician and General license. The GMRS license doesn’t require any testing. Just fork over $35 to the FCC and you will get a license and call sign. GMRS radios are short range for the most part but are repeater capable to extend their range. They are easy to use and excellent for community and neighborhood use. They use established channels and are compatible with the FRS walkie-talkies you can pick up at big box stores.

The second thing that I did was Join American Contingency (AmCon). The idea of a “Lone Wolf” going it alone is a fallacy for the majority of the population. We need community and that is what AmCon is all about. AmCon is a nation wide organization that promotes the establishment of local Teams networked to State, Regional, and National support. The recommended teams are 15 members within 30 miles or 30 minutes. We provide local, state and regional meet ups for training and face to face comradery. I have placed two links to the right. Please take a look. The more we train and help now the fewer we have to worry about later. Ideally everyone would be ready for any kind of disruption lasting a week or so at least. You need to be your own first responder. If help is coming it will be delayed.

I Support Israel

The Bible tells us of a time just like this. Is this the beginning of the end or just another act of evil? God only knows. I sure don’t.

What I do know is, what HAMAS has done is an atrocity. Not an act of war. The civilians killed were not collateral damage. They were the primary targets. Including the butchering of children and babies. This is very similar to the savage massacre of Jews in Bagdad in 1941 known as The FarHud.

Some have inaccurately compared this to our 9/11. It is much much worst. Just numbers alone. 9/11 would have had to have been about 25 times worse. Can you imagine if we lost 75,000 to a terrorist attack?

Israel should level and then reacquire the Gaza strip. Then allow or disallow access the same way they do the rest of the country.

Time to Regroup

It’s been a while since my post.

Lisa has had 4 surgeries. One was a serious cancer that thankfully was successfully removed.

Sebastian is now with his biological mother and sister in Minnesota. I truly regret that things ended the way they did but I have no regrets in all of our efforts. We did the best that we could.

Last summer I reopened the old garden spot and had a very successful crop. This year was a washout. Everything started out great and looked like it would produce better than last year. Then the rain started and then I got sick. Between the rain and the weeds the garden was a bust. Next year…

One of Olives heifers (Sassy) lost her calf. It was a battle but I milked her for about 6 months. At the end she would walk right in and let me milk her with minimal restraints. I recently dried her off when Olive had her calf. A little bull. I now have two milk cows to rotate. I found that while Olive provides more milk, Sassy produced a higher butterfat percentage.

One thing that worked well this year was the incubators. I had two running this spring adding to the duck, goose, guinea, and quail numbers.

Home butchering expanded this last winter. We processed the usual two hogs but then with the help of a fellow homesteader we home butchered our first steer. That was a chore but well worth it.

We added a Frontier Saw Mill to the homestead. I haven’t really put it to use. Mostly cutting up some old logs learning to use it. The first project is to build a smoke house and then expand the milk/feed barn. Eventually I would like to build a pole barn.
