First swarm of the year

Well actually the second. The first didn’t go into the trap. They just gathered in a big ball in a tree nearby and then flew away before I could catch them.
The swarm trap sits at the edge of my mother’s yard. Tuesday she called me at work to let me know she had just watched a swarm enter the box. She said it looked like a bee tornado and took about 15 minutes for them all to get inside.
That evening I got the last hive ready and into the bee yard. Wednesday after work and once all the bees were inside the box I closed the door and moved it. I set it on top of the hive and opened the door.
Thursday after work I moved the bees into the hive. I was surprised at the amount of comb they had created in just a day and a half. There were four bars with significant comb and several others with a line started.

After a puff from the smoker this guard was the only one that wouldn’t leave her post.

With the cover off you can see the bars and the corner of the bait (q-tip and lemongrass oil) bag.

Here is the first bar.

Here is the second.

The third.

7 third bar

And the fourth. It only has comb about the size of a silver dollar.

8 fourth bar

Looking into the box you can see the bait bag and all the bars have bees covering them steadily trying to build a home.

9 fifth bar

To give them a head start and save me some work in the future I added 2 bars of comb that I stole from another hive. Both had a small amount of honey as well.

10 adding comb

By placing the full bars of comb in between the ones they are building it will help them stay on the bars. I have guides but they still drift off track sometimes. Adding the full bars prevents this. It is also that much comb they don’t have to build so the queen should be able to start laying eggs sooner if not immediately. I’m sure the workers will have to go through and clean and inspect the cells before the queen will even consider using it but that will still be faster than if they had to build first.

I have run out of bars so I have to make some more before I can reset the trap. It’s going to rain this weekend so that is probably near the top of my inside list.

I will be selling any future swarms. Because 5 hives is enough for now. If you are local and interested contact me and I will start a list of interested individuals.

Hazzard of Free Range birds

The hazard of free range birds is they tend to nest as far from everything as possible. The dogs can’t be everywhere. The vermin just wait and then hop the fence, grab a bird and are gone before the dogs can do anything.

Last night around 10:30 the dogs were barking their something’s out here bark, so I grabbed the rifle and went out to see what was causing the problem. I saw eyes and then a streak of light colored fur but not knowing where the horses were I couldn’t do much even if I would have had time. Further searching found feathers leading back to a nest with 7 scattered eggs but no bird. That morning it had 2 turkeys sitting in it. The eggs were cool but not cold so I placed them under a hen nesting next to the house.

When I went out this morning to look for more evidence and maybe a dead bird both turkeys were back in the empty nest. My guess is that because there were 2 it was more than the critter could handle or it was confused enough that they both were able to escape. So this story has a happy ending for now. I hope they leave the nest now that it is empty and find a safer spot. If not they might not be so lucky next time.

FINALLY!!

I thought she was ready to pop several weeks ago. Her udder filled up more than a week ago. This morning she wasn’t at the barn so I knew Rosie finally had her calf. A little heifer we are calling Ruby.
Ruby will be for sale but we haven’t set a price yet.20150409_070039_resized 20150409_065056_resized 20150409_065249_resized

City squirrel goes to the country

We have a new rescue. A lady Lisa works with, but from the Atlanta office delivered this little guy to us yesterday. One of their neighbor boys found it but really didn’t know what to do with it. They asked us if we would take care of it and of course we said yes. They brought the neighbor kids with them and they fell in love with all the animals especially Patty, the youngest mini-horse.

Ducklings

While at the feed store this weekend I just couldn’t resist. They has some new ducklings so I got a few of each. For now they are living in the bathtub. Easy on them and on us.

Here they are resting quietly.

And here, not so much. They get down right wild when given a little water to play in.

They are fun to watch. They try to dive but the water isn’t quite deep enough. They don’t have true feathers yet so we don’t let them swim too long or too often.
