OUCH!

Marla has torn a palm sized place on her side. I don’t know for sure how she did it but she is very lucky it didn’t penetrate her stomach. I wanted to catcher her and put a stitch in it to help close the wound. Unfortunately she wouldn’t cooperate and we were not able to get her in the stall. We didn’t want her running or getting stressed so I got as close as I could and sprayed antibiotics on her. We’ll try again later. Until then I will just spray her every time I can get close. The best thing is we are not in fly season so that is something we don’t have to worry about.

Rosie is going to give us a new calf any day. Over the last week I have been able to feel the calf kick. This morning I noticed she was licking on her sides, alternating from one side to the other. I expected to find a calf when I got home. Not yet, but the calf is kicking hard tonight and Rosie is keeping to herself more.

Soon she will have a calf of her own and she woun’t have to adopt others to fill that desire.

UPDATE on Marla

She never would let me put any stitches in but I was able to clean it up and cover it with “Blue Cote.” It is closing up well on its own. Not as fast as it wold have but at least it’s not getting worse or infected.

Castration Day

We sold another little boar today. Tony I hope you had a good trip home and the little guy will provide many years of service.

We still have 2 registered guilts for sale.

We castrated the rest of the KuneKune crosses this afternoon. It is amazing to me how they show almost no sign of being cut when you turn them loose. They squeel more from being held than anything else we are doing to them. We have 1 KuneKune cross sow that we would like to sell and one guilt still for sale. Both are solid black. If some one buys them we will give them pick of the next litter if they want a boar to go with 1 or both of them. We plan to put the sows back with the boars in the next week or so. We should have more piglets ready mid-summer.

Nothing Cuter Than Baby Goats

On Thursday, I got a call that my sisters goat had 3 new kids. I went over to lend a hand because she didn’t have a heat light and it was going to get down to about 25 degrees. When I arrived only one of the kids had been nursing and the smallest was acting week. We were able to mix up a concoction of the mothers milk, sugar, and boost and get several syringes into the ones that weren’t nursing. I left for about 30 minutes and when I returned all 3 were up and looked to be doing better but we still gave them more from the syringe and my sister was going to keep an eye on them through the night. I haven’t heard how they are doing but I assume no news is good news.

Selling piglets and meeting new people

A pair of KuneKune crosses left for their new home Saturday. Lucy I hope they do well and provide you with many healthy piglets. I’m sure you will have them sitting for treats and rolling over to get their belly rubbed in no time. I would also like to thank Lucy for taking in one of our rescue kittens a while back.

We had company Sunday. Richard, I had a wonderful time showing you around the farm and discussing what we are doing and what we are planning in the future. Even though the weather wasn’t very pleasant I think we made the best of it. You are welcome to come back any time. I hope that as you get your fences and structures set up we can provide livestock for your farm.
