Hiving the first swarm of the year.

The weather has not cooperated at all this year. The ground is too wet to put in the garden and the wet and cold has kept me from putting the swarm I caught last weekend into it’s hive. I placed the swarm trap on top of the hive but that’s all I felt comfortable doing. I didn’t want to stress them by opening the box when it was cold especially since they were just getting started and didn’t have any food stored up.

The problem with waiting is the bees had a week to start building in the box. The box being square and the hive sides being sloped meant I wasn’t able to just move the bars into the hive. The bees started building in the corner so the comb was also attached to the side. I had to carefully lift each bar out and then cut some of the comb so it would fit into the hive.

Then I took the big pieces of comb and attached them to a couple of bars using string and hair clips. I have done this before and it works quite well. The bees just build around the clips. They can be cut out at some point or left in place and removed when the wax and honey are harvested. The smaller pieces of comb got placed in the bottom of the hive. The bees will recycle the wax.

After I got all the bars moved I took a goose feather and swept the rest of the bees into the hive. (If you have turkeys and geese you don’t need to buy a bee brush.) There were a few that didn’t want to leave the box but I left it open and they eventually left and found their way into the hive.

Leak in the fish tank!

Friday night when I went down to feed the fish I got a surprise. The fish tank had sprung a leak again. This time I can’t find the leak. No water dripping and no wet places on the tank. I think the glass must have flexed a little and once the water pressure decreased enough it sealed back up. I think I will just strip it out and reseal it. I am going to build shelves for all three of the tanks and I will create a pocket for this tank to set in so the glass can’t flex at all.

Fortunately the tanks are in the basement and I had an empty one to move the fish into. It is slightly smaller and they are a little crowded but they seam to be doing fine. I am going to split them up and place half into another tank once I get it set up. Some of them will also go out into the aquaponics system.

I guess spring has officially sprung

While walking around the farm today I found a hen with new baby chicks tucked in next to the aquaponics fish tank. The piglets were sunning themselves and there was a swarm of bees near the bee yard.

It was probably from one of my hives but I can’t be sure until I can open them up this weekend. Fortunately they were in a place I could get a ladder to and I was able to shake the swarm into my swarm trap. I have not placed the trap out yet partially because I thought it was too early and partially because it has rained the last couple of weekends. I was obviously wrong about it being too early. I will need to open the hives this weekend and add some empty bars (checker boarding) to help remove the erg to swarm. Technically not checker boarding because I am using top bar hives. I am opening the brood area and adding empty bars to the rest of the hive as well.

Olive the new Jersey cow has come a long way since arriving on the farm. When she arrived she had not been handled. She was a breeder cow. I have made an effort to touch her every day when I feed the cows and now I can brush her all over while she is eating. She has tamed down much faster than I ever imagined. We should have a new calf in about another month so I should be milking her shortly after that. I still have to build a milking stanchion in the next couple of weeks so she has time to get used to it before the calf comes.

Marla was never breed or if she was something happened along the way. I think she is outside of the window for calving even if she would have been bread the day she left to come here. She is still big bellied but I think she is just well fed. A little bit of grain and all the hay she wants.

I haven’t really decided where my little mixed up herd is going yet but it will be an interesting ride with many new experiences along the way.
