Stella the Squirrel

Link

The rescued squirrel is now named Stella. She is doing well and has started coming out from hiding and socializing.

Stella

Lisa has been feeding Stella a mixture of Esbilac Milk Replacer (found at Tractor Supply) and a little babyfood yogurt and oatmeal. Stella says Lisa is a very good cook.

I found O-ring syringes and nipples at Fox Valley Animal Nutrition. They are working much better than anything we have ever used before. I will probably stock up on sizes for larger animals later.

They also have milk replacer for a variety of different animals from squirrels to elk. We try their milk replacer next time but Esbilac is working fine for us now.

Aquaponics Heater

I was unable to keep the water warm enough for the Tilapia last year so I ended up moving them into aquariums in the basement over the winter. While trying to find a better solution I found this on youtube. It cost less to build than a single heater for the 40 gal aquarium. So far it is keeping the 300 gal tank around 76 degrees with out any insulation. As fall turns to winter and the temperature drops I will need to insulate the sides. I am using old hot tub covers to insulate the top. I would love to be able to take credit for this design but I can’t.

Here is the video.

Rescued Squirrel

I rescued this little girl from the dogs Saturday. I don’t know how they didn’t kill her.

Not a mark on her. Once I got her cleaned up we started working to get her rehydrated. Everythng we have read told us not to feed baby squirrels formula if they were not hydrated because their systems could not digest the food. She is doing well now and eating like a little pig.
